Where is Jesus foretold in the Old Testament?

Jesus told the Jews who sought to kill Him that the Old Testament Scriptures foretold of Him. He said in John 5:39, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.”

Jesus also told two disciples after His resurrection in Luke 24:25-27, “‘O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?’ And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.”

Some of the Old Testament passages that speak of Jesus, foretelling of His birth, deity, righteousness, governance, anointing, suffering, atonement, death, and resurrection, are as follows:

  • Isaiah 7:14 says, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”

  •  Isaiah 9:6-7 says, “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.”

  •  Micah 5:2 says, “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.”

  •  Deuteronomy 18:15 says, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear.”

  •  Deuteronomy 18:18-19 says, “I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.”

  •  Isaiah 11:2 says, “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.”

  •  Isaiah 61:1-3 says, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”

  •  Isaiah 11:3-5 says, “And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, and He will not judge by what His eyes see, nor make a decision by what His ears hear; But with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; and He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, and faithfulness the belt about His waist.”

  •  Deuteronomy 32:43 says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people; For He will avenge the blood of His servants, and render vengeance to His adversaries; He will provide atonement for His land and His people.”

  •  Isaiah 53:4-6 says, “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

  •  Isaiah 53:12(b) says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors, and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors” (Read Isaiah 53 in its entirety, as it all speaks of Jesus.)

  •  Psalm 22:1-2 says, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; and in the night season, and am not silent.”

  •  Psalm 22:16-18 says, “For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.
They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”

  •  Psalm 16:9-11 says, “Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

I hope these Old Testament passages help equip you to share the gospel with your Jewish friends, co-workers, and neighbors, testifying that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah foretold in the Old Testament Scriptures, who was crucified for their sins.
