Will God judge those with mental illness?

People often wonder whether or not God will judge (at the end of all things) those who suffer from mental illness. Although the Bible does not address mental health or mental illness specifically, it reveals that all God’s judgments are perfect, holy, righteous, true, and trustworthy because He knows everything that can be known, and nothing is hidden from His sight.

Consider the following verses that speak to those truths:

  • Hebrews 4:13 states, “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

  • Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.”

  • Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.”

  • Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He.”

  • Psalm 96:13 proclaims, “For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with His truth.”

  • Psalm 89:14 states, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; lovingkindness and truth go before You.”

In light of these biblical facts, God is acutely aware of the inner workings of mental illness and diminished mental capacities. He is also privy to whether those who suffered from various forms and degrees of mental illness were aware of their sinful choices, or if they resulted from something completely outside of their control. Regardless, God will rightly judge every individual with a righteous, just, and true judgment according to His perfect and absolute knowledge of all things.

I hope this brief answer sheds a bit of light on the issue of mental illness and God’s judgment upon those who suffer from various degrees of it.
