It Felt Like Another Dead-End Conversation

I was recently contacted by someone who challenged me on Jesus’ deity. Based on his email’s doctrinal argument, I knew contending for the truth would be an uphill battle.

Initially, I felt that same overwhelming heaviness that I usually experience whenever I hear heresy from avid opponents of the faith. Given his flawed interpretation method, I also wondered if I had the emotional energy to address his misinterpretations and objections while presenting the truth effectively.

After heaving a heavy sigh, the Holy Spirit aroused my “fight or die” spirit. He used this person’s spiritual deception as my fuel to engage, knowing how grieved I always am when someone believes lies, and their eternity is at stake because of it.

Over several weeks, we exchanged multiple in-depth emails on the subject. But, unfortunately, nothing I presented, explained, or methodically and meticulously communicated produced any favorable results. Instead, I realized that unbelief is a powerful force, even in the face of truth.

Then one day, his words shocked me!

He said he had never studied Jesus from an angle of divinity. His statement was not only the first glimmer of hope I saw from him after everything I shared about Jesus, but it was the first time anyone ever responded favorably during these types of doctrinal debates over the years.

When I read his words, my heart flooded with hope. It was so encouraging to tangibly see how the Holy Spirit had been working behind the scenes when all I witnessed were objections and a refusal to acknowledge the truth.

This encounter is still ongoing, but I shared it because communicating biblical truth to others can often be exhausting, appear fruitless, or hurt someone’s feelings—including your own. But when someone’s eternity is at stake, we cannot stay silent or shy away from difficult discussions. Plus, our interactions might be what God uses to turn the tide in their heart and mind. So, stay the course and keep fighting the good fight of faith!
